What is palm kernel oil?

Palm kernel oil (PKO) is an oil extracted from the seed (kernel) inside the oil palm fruit, Elaeis guineensis. It is different from crude palm oil, which comes from the fleshy outer part of the same fruit. PKO is pale, hard at room temperature, and rich in lauric acid.

What is palm kernel oil used for?

PKO is used mainly in soap and detergents, in cosmetics and personal care (shampoo, lotions, creams), and in specialty foods like non-dairy creamers, chocolate coatings and ice cream. Its lauric acid content also makes it a feedstock for oleochemicals such as sodium lauryl sulphate.

What is the difference between palm oil and palm kernel oil?

Palm oil (CPO) comes from the fruit's mesocarp and is orange, high in beta-carotene. Palm kernel oil comes from the hard seed inside, is pale, harder, and much higher in lauric acid. They are two different oils from the same fruit, with different uses and prices.

Is palm kernel oil the same as coconut oil?

No, but they are chemically similar. Both are rich in lauric acid, so PKO is often used as a lower-cost substitute for coconut oil in soap, cosmetics and some food applications.

Is hydrogenated or modified palm kernel oil bad for you?

Palm kernel oil is already very high in saturated fat. Fully hydrogenated PKO has no trans fat, but partially hydrogenated versions can contain trans fats, which are best avoided. As with any saturated fat, moderation matters for dietary use.
